Helderberg Fire article correction

Published in News on 18 Apr 2011

erinvalelarge20110418140842For the sake of clarity, we are posting this letter sent to the Editor of the Argus to correct the mistake the Weekend Argus made in naming us as possible culprits of the weekend’s tragic fire.

“The fire that caused such devastation to the Helderberg and displaced and disrupted the lives of so many of its residents is indeed tragic and we would like to convey our sympathy to all those who suffered loss as a result. In times like these it is always understandable to look for a place to lay the blame. The Weekend Argus did that in its front page headline and supporting story, citing as the likely culprits the Erinvale Estate, an “exclusive hotel and golf course”.

It is most regrettable that the Weekend Argus did not check their facts first before going to print. Had they done so, they would have quickly discovered that the Erinvale residential estate and golf course is a totally separate entity from the Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa. While we were informed of the plans for the so-called “controlled burning”, we were not in any way responsible for them and certainly not for the subsequent and deeply regrettable consequences.

As far as the Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa is concerned, as soon as the situation developed, we took food and drink to the crisis centre and informed them that our hotel was willing to offer support in whatever way was needed, including help in accommodating the displaced families. As a local business, we are committed to being an integral part of the community and to adding value wherever we can. In particular, we have always supported the efforts of the local fire department. We trust this clarifies the true role we played in this unfortunate event.”
